About This Course

A standard culvert replacement, a major river crossing, a bridge rehabilitation and a new irrigation canal all follow different submission paths, and a missing report or an off-the-record conversation with a bidder can delay a project or put a tender at risk. This course explains what consultants are expected to deliver at each stage of Alberta provincial bridge and water management projects, and how to prepare and support the tender.

You will cover the engineering standards and drawings used for bridge work, geotechnical submissions, bridge surveys and bench marks, and the draft report, design note and record keeping requirements. The course then follows each type of bridge project: standard bridges and culverts, major bridges with value engineering and a risk register maintained throughout, bridge assessments and load evaluations, and rehabilitation from preliminary engineering through tender. Construction stage services include design engineering support, fabrication inspection with the welding inspector and testing qualifications required, and construction inspection. On tendering, you will review how a tender package is assembled and submitted, the tender document and materials, and your role during the advertising and acceptance period, including drafting addenda, analyzing bid results and directing all bidder contact to the procurement officer. The final module turns to water management infrastructure such as dams, weirs, canals, flood control works, pump houses and pipelines, covering topsoil conservation, land acquisition, approvals, licences and permits, stakeholder input, and conceptual, preliminary and final design reporting. It is well suited to consulting engineers and project managers delivering bridge or water projects for the province.
